The Deans’ responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordinating the development, implementation, and review of the School’s Academic Vision and Goals Statement in line with the Ministry of Education policies, as well as providing academic leadership towards the realization of the school’s set academic objectives and performance targets.

Hospital Hill High School offers the following subjects in accordance with the approved 8-4-4 curriculum as prescribed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD):

  3. Kiswahili
  4. Chemistry
  5. Biology
  6. Physics
  7. Christian Religious Education (CRE)
  8. History and Government
  9. Geography
  10. Business Studies
  11. Computer Studies
  12. Home Science
  13. Agriculture
  14. Art and Design
  15. French
  16. Islamic Religious Education (IRE)

At the end of Term One in Form Two, learners were guided through a subject selection process based on individual aptitude, interest, and career aspirations, in line with KICD guidelines. At this stage, learners made an informed decision on whether to continue with Physics or drop it, while ensuring compliance with the requirement to study at least two humanities and a minimum of two science subjects, such as Chemistry and Biology and one group 5 subject (technical)

The school has adopted a broad, balanced, and relevant curriculum that supports the attainment of the National Education Goals as outlined in the Basic Education Act, 2013. These goals are systematically integrated into the teaching and learning processes across all subject areas to promote intellectual, moral, social, and physical development of the learner.

In line with national education reforms, the school is in the process of transitioning to the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, with the roll-out of Grade 10 expected in January 2026. Under the CBE framework, learners will be prepared to pursue one of the three approved pathways, namely:

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM);
  • Social Sciences; and
  • Arts and Sports.

This transition is being undertaken in accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines to ensure continuity, quality assurance, and smooth coexistence with the 8-4-4 system during the transition period.

The department is responsible for coordinating the effective implementation of the curriculum and syllabus coverage at all levels of learning within the school. It ensures that learner-centered, inclusive, and competency-based instructional methodologies are applied, and that continuous assessment, summative evaluation, and feedback mechanisms are effectively utilized to monitor and enhance learner achievement.

It is the commitment of the school that by the time a learner completes his studies at Hospital Hill Senior School, he will have acquired the requisite knowledge, skills, values, and competencies that enable him to compete fairly and transition successfully to higher levels of education and training, both nationally and internationally.

The school has also adopted a vertical teaching system, whereby subject teachers progress with the same cohort of learners through the various levels until completion of the final examinations. This approach enhances continuity, learner support, academic mentorship, and accountability in curriculum delivery.The school has adopted a rich curriculum that promotes the achievement of the National Education Goals in Kenya which are infused in the teaching of different subjects in the curriculum.
Teaching Computer Studies, Agriculture, Home Science, Art & Design, and Business Studies enables the learner to acquire knowledge that can be used effectively in the future for self-economic gains and enhance self–reliance.
Special subjects like French is geared towards assisting the learner in nurturing their language skills which they can make use of in terms of job opportunities.

The department also deals with the coordination of the implementation of the syllabus at different levels in the school.
It is also in charge of ensuring that appropriate methods are used in implementing the curriculum and testing the learners for effective achievement to build an all-round citizen.
It is the desire of the school that by the time the learner leaves School, he will be equipped with the skills and knowledge that make him fit and competes fairly well with other learners joining higher levels of learning institutions in this country or elsewhere.
The school has adopted a vertical system where a subject teacher moves with the learners up to the time they do the exams in their final year.
